Bedford Park House
Bedford Park House is a mid-19th century Arts and Crafts villa in the Bedford Park Estate near Turnham Green.
The challenge was how to poetically transform the interior, honouring its past while looking to the future. We leaned into ‘Art’ and ‘Craft’ to reimagine the interior of this family home using bold colours, contemporary decorative arts and traditional craftsmanship in unexpected ways, elegantly balancing the history of the house with contemporary family living and a deeply personal narrative. We designed and developed all cabinetry and interior finishes and fully furnished the house, including the acquisition of several important contemporary design pieces and artworks.
We set out to preserve a classical sense of art and craftsmanship in this beautiful Arts and Crafts house, in an original and unexpected way. We mixed historic materials, such as the William Morris wallpaper frieze, with bespoke elements, made from a natural, honest materials, appearing as worktops, cabinetry and striking geometric flooring designs. Heirloom antiques from Art Nouveau through to mid-20th century design classics by Mario Bellini and Ettore Sottsass, mix with edgier contemporary pieces and collectible artworks from our favourite galleries, all playing harmoniously with the strong colour palette.
There is a lot of joy in this colourful house. Our client expressed herself through the rich, jewel colours that she chose to wear, so we decorated her home with these same colours. Each space has a strong and personal identity, with its own interpretation of the palette. We repeated certain colours across decorative elements throughout the house and introduced an exciting curation of contemporary artworks, so it feels calm rather than overwhelming. You can live with these colours every day and not get tired of them.
